Family Mausoleum
Osnabrück
This mausoleum in the municipal cemetery of a mid-size German town strives to revive the lost tradition of celebrating a family’s continuous connection with their local community and the accomplishments of its members through architectural form. The single-spaced edifice is made from monolithic solid stone masonry. A double-leafed wrought-iron grate opens to a small prayer room. Opposite the entrance sits an altar, recessed within a wall niche while two accompanying niches on either side are designated as places for the mortal remains of the deceased. A dome, with an open oculus, rests upon the arches covering the eight sides of the room. Based on the models of ancient temple architecture, it directs one’s view, through the incoming rays of light, towards the deceased.
